Villa Waldberta and Ebenböck are not barrier-free
Featuring the current guest artists at Ebenböckhaus, performance artist Miriro Mwandiambira and the painters Grace Nyahangare and Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude the exhibition presents works and ideas they have developed since the start of their residency in Munich in April 2026.
The year 2026 also marks the 30th anniversary of the town twinning between Harare and Munich, providing the artists with an opportunity to reflect on movement within and between these two cities. In doing so, they explore the economic, political, cultural and social dimensions of mobility.
The artists’ residency in Munich has been organised in collaboration with the First Floor Gallery in Harare and Lothringer 13 Halle.

Villa Waldberta is situated on a hill overlooking Lake Starnberg.
The view is sweeping and serene. The landscape appears peaceful and untouched by the passage of time.
What was once a retreat for the upper middle classes became a military hospital during the Second World War. Later, the villa served as a place of refuge and temporary accommodation for displaced persons. Today, it is a place where artists can think, reflect and work.
Villa Waldberta reflects different eras and their histories. It demonstrates how the significance of a place changes over time. In doing so, opposites such as beauty and violence can coexist. Our perception is not unambiguous. It changes with shifts in perspective, time and experience. Students from the Faculty of Design at Munich University of Applied Sciences are developing new conceptual and visual works that engage with and reinterpret the historical context. The exhibition invites visitors to look more closely and to question their first impressions.
